Scope note
Marks stamped on valuable or unique objects such as jewelry, silverware, furniture, and timepieces, for the purpose of identifying the craftsman or workshop of origin. Distinguished from "hallmarks" which are official stamps affixed by guilds or assay offices as evidence of the quality of the metal.
